16 - Updated!!!

Hey, Im new to posting Fanfics on boards so I'm just guessing with how its sposed to work or whatever. Just murder me if I do something wrong and end up accidently murdering everything.

Chapter 1:
I was sitting on the floor of my bedroom in our apartment in southern California. I heard the knock on the door but seeing as Mum was home I didn’t get up. I was comfortable. I was leaning against the wall, listening to my favourite CD and stitching a new patch onto my bag. It wasn’t until I heard the yelling that I decided to turn off my music and see who it was. My Mum never yells. She is generally a very calm person (that’s what pisses me off about her sometimes) so needless to say, I was rather curious as to who was making her this angry. I got up off my comfy spot on the floor, walked quietly to the door and crept down the hall, not wanting to let my Mum and who ever it was know that I was listening.

“I just wanted to see her.” A familiar yet strange voice said.
“But why now?” My mum yelled back “After all this time?”
“I know I haven’t been here, but I’m here now!” I know that voice, where have I heard it before?

I edged a little around the corner to get a look at who it was, hoping they couldn’t see me. I saw my Mum sit down at the kitchen table, placing her elbows on the table and her face in her hands.

Standing across from her was someone I never thought I would see this close, let alone in my apartment.
“I want to see Danielle.” He said again, this time much quieter.
“A year or two ago I would have said that she wants to see you too,” my Mum said “but now… She’s given up on you Mike. You were never here and she waited for you to come and see her for 15 years…she’s given up on you.”
“I know I wasn’t here, but I’m here now and I’m her father and I want to see her and be part of her life.”

What the fuck is going on? Mike Dirnt is standing in my living room talking with my Mum about me. Unless Mum has some other kid with the same name as me who she’s never mentioned they must be talking about me, right?

I looked down at the t-shirt I was wearing. It was my oldest Green Day t-shirt. Surprisingly it still fits me; it was somewhat gigantic when I first got it. I had gotten it when I first started to really get into Green Day when I was 9. American Idiot had just came out and I was going through all of Mum’s CDs because I knew she had some Green Day in there. She had all of their CDs. She told me that when she used to live in Berkeley, her and her friends would go and see them, back when they were called Sweet Children. I had always liked their music because I had grown up with it. I stole all Mum’s Green Day CDs and they became my favourite band. I was proud to like the same music that Mum did when she was younger. She bought me heaps of merchandise like T-shirts and Posters and stuff and she even gave me an old vinyl record that she had gotten signed back just after Kerplunk came out. It’s framed and sits on my wall above my bed. Mum had bought me the T-shirt for Christmas in 2004 and obviously I still wear it. It was black, like most of my t-shirts, with Green Day written in red dripping writing, it had the faces of Billie Joe, Tre and the man standing in my living room, stenciled on it in white.

What is happening? The only explanation is that this man, Mike Dirnt, is my father, right? The man who left my mother before I was born, the man that has never ever written to me or sent me a Birthday card, the man that I’ve never heard from, is the same man that supplied the base line for half of my CD collection, that I have idolized for half of my life.

I didn’t realize that in the shock of what was happening, I had stumbled out of my hiding place in the shadows of the hall and into the light of the Kitchen/Living Room, into clear view of my Mum and my supposed father.

He looked up and we locked eyes for a couple of seconds before I realized I was staring and who I was staring at and switched my gaze to my Mum. She nodded slowly to the question that I didn’t even have to ask. I looked back at Mike.

So this was the man I had idolized and hated at the same time for years with out even knowing it.

“Danielle…” he breathed quietly, looking at me in shock, obviously finally realizing that he had a living breathing 16 year old daughter, even though he was the one that sought me out in the first place.

He’s shocked? For fuck’s sake. My father is Mike Fucking Dirnt. How could he do this to me? How could he not come and see me? Why didn’t anyone ever tell me? My Mum… How could she keep this from me when she knew how much I wanted to know my father and how much I idolized him and the rest of Green Day? She lied to me. And he wasn’t even here my whole life. I’m sure if he had been, he would have lied to me too.

“Dani?” I was pulled from my thoughts by my mother. “Honey?” she said cautiously. Not being able to take it any longer, I turned around, ran back to my room where I grabbed my keys to the Basement and my drumsticks off the desk and ran back past my still silent parents and out the front door, which I slammed as hard as I could.

--Mike’s POV--

“Dani?” Jackie said. “Honey?” she continued.

This is not good. I had been hoping that it would have gone better. Tears were visible in Danielle’s eyes and she ran back down the hall to what I assumed was her bedroom. Before I had the chance to run after her she had ran back past me and out of the door. Shit. This definitely could have gone better.

I went to go and find her when Jackie stopped me.
“I wouldn’t go after her if I were you.” She said.
“Why not?”
“She’s pissed off and upset. She’s gone to vent some steam, let her be alone.”
“Will she be okay?”
“She’ll be fine after awhile; she’s just gone down to the Basement.”
“The Basement?”
“Yeah, it used to be used as the general lounge for all the adults in the building but it never got used so we handed it over to the kids, surprisingly there are quite a few in the building, and now it’s like a chill out room for the teenagers that live here. Dani’s drum kit’s down there, so I’d say she’s down there smashing the shit out of her drums.”

“She plays the drums?” I asked. Stevie nodded and walked over to the kettle and switched it on. “I want to see her play.” I added.
“You’ll get your chance to see her play later. Right now, just let her be. Have a cup of coffee. She’s got band practice in half an hour so you can go down and stand in the door way while they play.”
“She’s in a band?” I said, not able to keep the pride out of my voice.

--Dani’s POV--

I was sitting at my drum kit when the rest of my band walked in. Two of my best friends made their way through the throng of people that had come down to The Basement to watch us play. There were always quite a few people at our practice sessions. It was just a thing you did on a Saturday afternoon if you were a punk rock loving teenager living in the building. All the regulars were there with their friends from elsewhere that had also come to be regulars.

When the rest of the band got to the small stage in the corner of the Basement and they saw my puffy red eyes they quickly came over to me.
“Are you okay?” my best girl friend and the bass player in our band, Alex, said.
“What happened?” asked James, our front man.
Before I answered them, I wondered vaguely for a second where our rhythm guitarist, Cody, was. I then remembered that he was visiting relatives in New York.
“What happened?” James asked again.
“My father came over.” I said blankly, looking up at Alex who had never been so shocked. “I met my Dad.”
“Oh my god,” Alex said quietly. “What was he like?”
The rest of the people in the room were getting a little restless and curious as to what was going on and why we hadn’t started playing yet; we didn’t usually like to waste time and we’re usually happiest when playing.
“I’ll tell you about it later, let’s just play.”
“Are you sure?” James said with concern in his eyes. “You don’t look up to playing.”
“No, it’s just what I need,” I said “To bash the shit out of something.”

Alex leant over and gave me a hug before picking up her bass and organizing the amp and chords of her microphone and stuff.

We went straight into Knowledge, an Operation Ivy cover. Although, no matter how many times I listen to the original version, I can never help thinking of it as a Green Day song. Probably because 1039 is my favourite Green Day album. Our band does a lot of Green Day covers, which usually makes me happy, but then it just made everything all too hard to understand and deal with.

As we finished Knowledge, I looked up passed Alex who gave me a sympathetic look. I looked over the small audience we had and to the doorway of the room. I knew Mum would bring him down to watch us practice. I just wish she hadn’t. This was my time to get away from everything, how was I supposed to do that with him standing there looking at me as though he had been there for me as I grew up? I quickly looked away when I felt the prickling feeling I had in my eyes that would soon turn into fresh tears, and I started to drum the beginning of Longview.

Woooo. Yes, here's Chapter 2, if anyones even reading it. Thanks to the one person that commented on it :D

Chapter 2

We played for a while longer and then decided to call it a day so people began to file out. Alex and James put away their instruments where they always put them (they also live in the same apartment building so they leave them in the Basement) and came over to me.

“Do you want to go get a drink?” James asked me.
“We can talk if you want.” Alex added.
I looked over their heads and saw my Mum and Mike making their way over to me.
“Yeah” I said, getting up “Let’s go quickly.”

We stepped down off the stage and I quickly made for the door before my Mum could stop me. I got to the bottom of the stairs that lead to the door and turned around to make sure my best friend’s were with me. There they were standing completely still, staring up at Mike. Obviously the baseball cap he was wearing to hide his identity wasn’t going to fool two die hard Green Day fans like Alex and James.

Shit. Alex began to stutter whilst James was also trying to string a sentence together.

“You guys were awesome.” Mike said quietly and although he was only looking at me when he said it, my friends were ecstatic. I quickly walked over to them and pulled them away.
“Come on” I said pleadingly. “Let’s go.”
I dragged them up the stairs and out of the Basement where they gave up in resisting me and walked beside me.
“What’s going on?” James asked me.
“I’ll explain later” I said picking up the pace as we walked back to mine and Mum’s apartment to get my bag.
“Please explain now.” Alex said.

I ignored her and unlocked the door and ran to my bedroom where I picked up my canvas bag, ripped off the Green Day patch that I had been half-way through stitching on, made sure that my wallet and phone were in the bag, quickly changed into a Fall Out Boy t-shirt and went back into my living room where Alex and James were talking excitedly about why Mike Dirnt could have been at our band practice.

“Are we going?” I asked opening the door. “Shall we take my car?”
“I guess so.” Alex and James followed behind me.

We walked a little way down the hall when we bumped into Mike and my Mum on the stairs. Once again Alex and James made feeble attempts to talk to the rock star but I grabbed them both and pulled them down the stairs.

“What the fuck?” James said “That’s Mike Dirnt, why can’t we talk to him?”
I continued to pull them until we were out in the sunlight of the car park when they both shook me off and turned me to look at them.
“What the hell is going on?” Alex said looking at me with concern and confusion. “Why in all hell is Mike Fucking Dirnt with your Mum and why aren’t we allowed to talk to him?”
I sighed and looked down at my feet.
“What’s going on?” she said very quietly.
“Mike Dirnt is my Dad.”

No matter how many times I thought it, saying it definitely had a bigger effect on me. It seemed to make it all more real. I could hear Alex and James begin to talk about what I had just revealed but I didn’t pay much attention to what they were saying. What did this all mean? Mike being my Dad. Am I going to have to start spending time with him? Staying at his house? Meeting his family and friends? Meeting Estelle? Estelle…his other daughter, the daughter whose life he was there for, the daughter who he was in contact with.

I sat down on the curb of the car park and felt Alex and James sit down on either side of me. We sat there for quite a while, just thinking.
“So…” Alex began, she wasn’t going to say anything to me about it just yet, she knows me too well and she knew I wouldn’t want to talk about it just yet. “How about that drink?”
“Good idea.” James said standing up and offering me his hand which I took with a grateful smile. He helped me up and we all walked the very small distance to my car.
“So where are we going?” Alex asked from next to me once we were all seated comfortably in the car.
“Starbucks,” I said, pulling out of the car park. “I could really use a coffee right now.”

“Are you sure you’re ready?” Alex asked me. We were standing outside the empty apartment between ours (we lived two doors down from each other). We had already said goodbye to James and she was giving me a last minute pep talk. I nodded at her question. “Are you sure you don’t want me in there with you?” she said hopefully. I smirked at her badly hidden eagerness to be in the same room as her favourite bass player.
“I’ll be fine.” I said. “I’ll call you.”

We said goodbye to each other and I walked over to my door which I opened slowly and nervously after pulling my long dark brown hair, littered with bright red and black streaks, back into a messy bun. I walked into the main living area of our flat to see Mum and Mike on the couch facing each other, each holding a bottle of beer. They were deep in conversation which stopped when I entered the room. I took a deep breath.

“I want to talk.” I said to Mike, looking him straight in the eye.
“I’ll…just” Mum stuttered, obviously trying to think of an excuse to leave us alone. “Go down to the 7/11 to get some milk.” She picked up her keys, gave me a quick kiss on the cheek and a hug and rushed out the door.

I sat down at the kitchen table, watching out of the corner of my eye as he got up from the couch and sat down across from me. Silence set in, neither of us eager to start the conversation.

“You are a really good drummer.” Mike said breaking the silence. “Tre would-“
“Stop with the small talk.” I cut him off. “I want you to answer my questions.”
“Okay.” He said, leaning back in his chair.
“I want you to tell me what happened; what happened between you and my Mum and why you never contacted me.” I said calmly but shakily, looking down at my hands as I fiddled with the table cloth.

Mike took a deep breath, filled with what seemed to be anxiety, before beginning the story.
“I met your mother at Gilman Street before the band was even called Green Day.” He began, talking slowly. “We dated for a while, but ended up breaking up some time after Kerplunk but before Dookie. We stayed friends, she had always been rather close to Billie Joe and she got on really well with Tre so she was always around, it would have been difficult if we didn’t get along. Some time in 1994, I got into a really big fight with my fiancé, so I went to some local pub. Jackie had also had a fight with her boyfriend at the time and she just happened to go to the same place as me.” He paused for a few seconds, trying to think of the right words to say what he was trying to say, without grossing me out or making me angry.
“We got talking about old times and what went wrong in our relationship and stuff, we drank a few drinks to many…and…one thing…lead to another.” Thankfully he realized that I can put two and two together and stopped there. He took a swig of his beer before continuing the story in another direction.
“A couple of days later I went back to my fiancé and we sorted everything out. I didn’t hear from your mother for three months, we were both too embarrassed and ashamed to call each other and Jackie was becoming more and more distant from Billie Joe and Tre as well. When she called me and told me she was pregnant, I had been married for two months and I really didn’t want to screw my marriage up. I made one of the worst decisions of my life, and decided to not tell anyone but Tre and Billie, I set up a direct debit from my bank account to Jackie’s, for child support and I never spoke about it.” His voice seemed to crack a little bit so I looked up into his eyes, despite how hard it was for me to hear what he was saying, I realized for the first time how much my blue eyes resembled his.
“I planned to tell Anastasia one day, but as time went on it became harder and harder. When you were born, Billie, Tre and I went and visited you and your mother together. She told me that I didn’t have to be there, that she could handle it on her own. I was stupid and I believed her. I left and I haven’t seen you since then. I do regret it, I want you to know that.” He said looking down at his hands and then back up to look at me.
“What happened then?” I said, realizing for the first time that I had been crying, I wiped my tears away with the back of my hand and then continued. “Did you ever tell your wife about me? Does anyone know apart from Tre and Billie Joe? Does Estelle know that I exist?”
“The year after you were born, I got swept up in everything, my marriage, the rock and roll life, we had Estelle the year after that. I never did tell Anastasia until last week. I decided that it was time to contact you and I knew that before I did, I had to do what was right by everybody, and that meant telling her and clearing the air, even though we’re not married anymore.”
“How did she take it?” I asked.
“She was shocked, but I think she took the news a bit better than Estelle. I told Estelle last week too, she was extremely pissed off that she had a big sister her whole life that she never knew about. She’s not angry at you, don’t worry about that.” He added, picking up on my anxiousness at having Estelle hate me before she even met me.

“What made you come here now?” I said. “Why now after all this time?”
“I have been thinking about you more and more in the past year. I realized that I have missed out on too much of your life.”
“Damn right.” I couldn’t help but mutter.
“I realized that the longer I put it off the harder it would be. I thought you’d be able to understand better, now that you’re older.”
“So you left it longer?” I was getting angry now. “You thought that the older I was, the easier it would be for me to understand that while I was here waiting for my Dad, you were traveling all over the world making millions of dollars and being a proper Dad to your ‘little hero’.” I was getting so angry that I stood up and ran my hands through my hair, trying to calm myself down. Mike remained seated but looked up at me.
“It’s been hard for me too.”
I can’t believe he just said that.
“Hard for you? You have no idea what I have been through. For years I waited for some sign of my father. I waited and waited until I eventually gave up. I knew you were out there somewhere; that you knew I existed because I know about the money that goes into Mum’s account every month. When I was little I didn’t understand but it was easier than it has been over the last few years, I held onto the small amount of hope that I still had. It became harder when I got older and realized that you just didn’t fucking care!” I yelled, slamming my fist on the table with the last four words. “And you know what the few things that got me through were? My Mum, who I just found out, lied to me my whole life; my drums and friends, which I thankfully still have; and your bands fucking music which now just seems to make everything worse!” Tears flowed freely down my face and I dropped my voice and tried to speak calmly.
“I am willing to forgive you, but right now I just…” I couldn’t think of the right words to say what I wanted to say. “I just… I want you to know how hard it was for me and how much I wanted you in my life.” I wanted to say more but I was unsure what and how so, with that I turned around and walked back to my bedroom, leaving Mike, sitting alone at the kitchen table.

Here's Chapter 3. Thanks for the response so far, I'm glad you like it and I hope you continue to like it.

Chapter 3:

I closed the door to my bedroom and leant back against it, breathing out a long and staggered breath as the last of my tears poured down my face. I crawled onto my bed and grabbed my pillow, hugging it tightly to me as my tears dried up. I then realized that I was holding my favourite pillow and threw it across the room. Usually my favourite pillow made everything seem better again, but holding tightly onto a Kerplunk pillow with Green Day written on it didn’t seem to help. Instead I grabbed another pillow, this one Green Day free and curled up in the corner of my bed, staring blankly into space. I’m not sure how much time passed, but after a while, I heard a soft knock at the door and my Mum’s head peeked inside the room. She gave me a sympathetic smile and joined me on the bed. I tried to be angry at her but I melted into her arms as they wrapped around me.

“I’m so sorry honey.” She said as she kissed the top of my head.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked, I was no longer crying but it felt good to sit in my Mum’s embrace, like a vulnerable little child who had fallen over in the playground.
“I’m not sure.” She said “I think it was kind of like, I’ve said that he’s not going to be there and there’s no going back on that now.”
“But once I started to like Green Day, why didn’t you tell me then? Wasn’t it weird to see me basically worshipping my father with out even knowing it?”
“I was actually really happy to see you liking Green Day; I wanted to see you have some connection to your father even if it was too hard for me to tell you who he was.”

I didn’t say anything; I just sat there, thinking about what she had said.
“Mike and I were talking and we think,” Mum began after we sat in silence for a while. “Maybe you could go and spend a week with Mike at his house; you could meet Estelle and everyone and get to know your father.”
A week was pushing it a bit. “Maybe… How about 2 days?” I suggested.
“5 days.”
“3.”
“4 days.” Mum said this firmly and I knew that there was no point bartering with her any longer even though I didn’t like the idea of having to spend four days with Mike when over the course of 16 years he hadn’t managed to spare me five minutes of his time until now.
I didn’t say anything and Mum took that as my silent agreement to the idea and she moved to get off the bed.
“I’ll leave you on your own for a while.” She said, kissing me once more on the head before leaving the room.

I sat on the edge of my bed, my hands on my knees, gazing at the carpet. I lifted my head to look around my room and found myself being looked at by my father from all sides of my bedroom. Some how, Green Day didn’t make anything alright anymore. Their music used to be somewhat of a cure all for all of my problems, but now, everything had changed. I got up off my bed and walked over to my CD rack, pulled out my copy of Nuthin’ For No One by The Disables and slipped the disk into my stereo. I turned the volume up to its maximum volume and put 1039, which had been in my CD player, into its case which I left on my desk.

Over the next 15 minutes I took down most of my Green Day posters (I got bored from pulling them down carefully with out peeling off all of the paint on the walls so I decided to come back to the posters later), stripped the Kerplunk pillow case from my pillow; I removed my Green Day CDs from the CD rack and placed them on my desk, ready to take them out into Mum’s CD collection in the Living Room later. I was looking at my framed, signed Kerplunk CD, deciding what to do with it, when there was a knock at my door.
“Come in.” I said.
The door opened and Mike walked in, one hand stuffed in the pocket of his black jeans. He opened his mouth to say something but stopped to look around my room and take in what he was seeing. I saw his eyes gaze over the walls and linger on certain things; like the American Idiot block mount and green and black Green Day banner that was hanging on one wall that I hadn’t yet taken down and the posters that were still up. He walked further into the room, tripping on a few things that were lying on my floor as he did so, I saw his eyes widen as he realized that he was tripping on a pair of old and slightly battered Green Day shoes. I watched him curiously as he walked over to my rather large black pin-up board which was covered with various pictures of me and my friends, Green Day concerts that I had been to, our band and clippings from magazines. I reached over to my bed side table for my stereo’s remote and turned the music down until it became a quiet background noise. Mike continued to familiarize himself with his surroundings, I think it scared him a little that he had a daughter that was so evidently obsessed with his music, maybe he had never been in a fans bedroom before, well since the time when they used to sleep on fans bedroom floors during their early tours. I saw him snicker at my mutilated Simple Plan poster that I had spent countless hours drawing on with Alex.

“I didn’t realize you were still here.” I said, sitting down on my bed.
“I’m going to stay the night on the couch.” He said, taking a seat at my desk chair. “It’s been a long day so I thought tomorrow we can talk more and organize when your gonna come and stay for a few days.”
I nodded and watched him out of the corner of my eye as he continued to discover different things I had around my room.
“Wow.” He breathed getting up to get a closer look at my Kerplunk CD. “I think I remember that day. It was just after Kerplunk came out; we were all sitting around having a few drinks and your Mum came in with her brand new copy of it, saying that she wanted autographs now because in a few years, when we were really famous, it would be worth a lot of money.” He grinned at the memory and walked back to the desk chair that he had been previously sitting at.

I looked out the small window and noticed how dark it was. My Harry Potter clock showed that it was getting late. I yawned.
“Ok, I’m going to bed now.” I said, hinting for Mike to leave.
“Oh, ok.” He said. “Good night.” He didn’t get up.
“You can go now.”
“Oh right.” He said getting up and almost tripping over my red and black bean bag in his haste to get out of the room. “Sorry” he added, peeling a poster that had gotten stuck to the bottom of his foot off his shoe. The door closed behind him and I sighed, falling back so I was lying on my caseless pillow.

A minute or two before, I had every intention of going to sleep, but once Mike left the room, I was all of a sudden wide awake. I was bored of taking down all my Green Day stuff, so I made sure there were no actual pictures of the band on my walls, not bothering to take down things with just the bands name on them. I walked over to my book case and pulled my photo albums off the shelf. I sat down in my bean bag and opened the first album. I flicked through the pages, looking at all the pictures of me growing up. My mother wasn’t in a lot of them, but that was mostly because she had been taking the pictures, not because she hadn’t been there. Mike wasn’t in any of them.

I got up off the bean bag and walked over to my desk where I pulled an empty photo album from the bottom drawer. I then crossed the room again, back to my comfy spot in the bean bag.

The next morning, when I awoke, I strained my ears to hear if anyone else was awake. I could hear the dull murmuring of the T.V. and the clinking of a spoon and a china cup so I assumed that both Mum and Mike were awake, watching some T.V. and drinking a cup of coffee. I picked my cell phone up off the bedside table to check the time. The digital display read 9:30 so I decided to send messages to Alex and James, asking them to meet me for coffee in half an hour. I picked out a pair of three-quarter black pants from my drawer and pulled them on. My phone beeped, signaling to me that I had gotten a message. I quickly chucked a black Ramones t-shirt on as I heard my phone beep again. I grabbed my cell and read the messages, both saying that my friends could go for coffee and that they would come over to my place in 20 minutes time. I pulled my battered black and red converse onto my feet and swept my hair back into a pony tail, not bothering to brush it.

I walked out into the living room, knowing that Alex would be at the front door any minute and not in 20 as we had planned.
“Good Morning.” Mike said from his spot on the couch where he was watching what appeared to be MTV.
“Morning.” I muttered, walking over to the fridge and taking out the milk. “Where’s my Mum?” I asked, taking a swig of the milk straight from the carton.
“She’s having a shower.” He said with a look of disgust on his face which I’m not sure was because of my milk drinking habits or the crap that was on MTV.
“What is this crap?” he asked, gesturing to the T.V. as someone knocked at the front door.
“It’s MTV, what do you expect?” I said, walking over to the door and opening it to reveal Alex, her short, naturally black pixie style hair do looking particularly spiky and cool. She was wearing a plain black t-shirt underneath her famous light coloured three-quarter overalls (covered in badges and patches) and her falling apart low-cut black chucks. Her green eyes sparkled wide as she threw her arms around me before holding me at arms length and shaking me saying “I need coffee!”
“I’d say you’ve had enough already.” I said. I heard Mike chuckle at our antics as I shut the door behind Alex who had just realized, at the sound of his laughter, that Mike was also in the room. She blushed and opened her mouth to speak, but closed it when she couldn’t find the words she was looking for.
I quickly came to her rescue. “Mike, this is Alex, my best friend. Alex, this is, well, Mike.”
Mike was obviously used to meeting shocked fans so he got up and shook Alex’s hand to try and break the tension. “You play bass right?” he asked “I was watching you guys play yesterday. You were all really good.”
“Thanks.” Alex said. I was expecting her to say something else, but for once in her life she seemed unable to say anything.
“Ok.” I said breaking a silence that had quickly set in. “Let’s go to my room.” I pulled Alex away.

We closed the door to my room, Alex sat down in my bean bag and I flopped onto my bed, which remained unmade from when I had gotten up earlier that morning.
“So what happened with Mike?” she asked, looking around at my walls, taking in the sudden lack of Green Day. “You seem to be more calm with him now.”
“I’m trying.” I said. “We had a big talk yesterday and he kind of explained everything, it was going well until I couldn’t control my anger and went sort of mental at him.”
“I can imagine that.” Alex stated, grinning like a mad man. I glared at her.

I heard a knock at the front door announcing James’ arrival, so we went out into the living room where Mike was already talking to James, who was managing not to freeze up when talking to the famous bass player like Alex had.
“Hey.” Said James, who was wearing a pair of baggy red tartan pants with suspenders dangling around his knees, a sex pistols t-shirt and black Dr Martins, his shaggy black hair (not naturally black like Alex’s) falling over his face slightly, bright blue streaks visible, some of it shadowing his grey eyes. He hugged us both.

“Let’s go.” I said.
“I concur” Alex nodded, pushing us towards the door. “I want coffee.”
“I’ll be back in a minute.” I said, quickly jogging back to my room. I grabbed my bag and the photo album that I had been working on the night before. When I got back to the lounge room, Alex and James said bye to Mike and walked out the door. I walked over to Mike and handed him the photo album.
“Here.” I said nervously, I just thought you might want some photos of me growing up and stuff.”
Without saying anything more I left him standing there holding the album and made my way down to James’ beat up old Combi.

Chapter 4:

What do you pack, when you are going to stay with the best bass player in the world, who you just found is your Dad, for four days? I stood in my room, with my duffel in front of me. The day before we had all decided that it would be easy if Mike stayed another night on our couch and then I went back with him the next day. I pulled a whole bunch of clothes out of my wardrobe and dumped them on the bed. I then threw 4 t-shirts (no Green Day), three pairs of pants and a skirt, a jacket and enough underwear and socks to last me till I got back into the bag. I then packed a toiletries bag with deodorant, my razor, toothbrush, hairbrush (even though I don’t use it often) and eyeliner and mascara. I zipped up the duffel and grabbed my canvas bag. In the bag, I made sure I had my iPod and its charger, my cell phone and its charger, my wallet, sunglasses, the book I was reading and notebook for scribbling down any lyrics that came into my head (in my band, we all liked to write and collaborated on most of our songs) and my drumsticks. I slipped my low-top chucks on and pulled one of my black hats onto my head. I picked up my stuff and walked out into the main room of our apartment. Mike picked up my duffel and took it out to his car.

“Have a good time Dani.” Mum said, as we stood near Mike’s car. “Try to be nice.” She smiled at me and pulled me into a hug.
“Cya Dani!” I heard two voices yelling from the apartment building. I looked up to see Alex and James standing on Alex’s small balcony, hanging over the railing; I had said a proper good bye to them the day before, after we had had one of our impromptu band rehearsals with out the other people of the building watching us.
“Cya!” I yelled back waving as I got into the car with Mike.

I said goodbye to Mum again and we pulled out of the car park. A slightly tense silence filled the car. I pulled my iPod out of my bag along with the car kit I had thrown in there at the last minute and plugged it into the car.
“You better not have any crap on that thing.” Mike commented.
I raised my eyes at him as if to say, ‘Do you really think I listen to crap music?’ The silence became a little bit more comfortable after that as we drove and listened to the sound of various bands that I had on my iPod.

I was beginning to think that the drive might not be that terrible when Governator began to play. I quickly reached forward and changed the song, finding it too weird to be listening to any Green Day yet let alone listening to a song sung by Mike while I was in the car with him. I saw him tense beside me at how fast and eagerly I changed the song. And the uncomfortable silence was back.

Oakland was only a little over an hour’s drive away so I didn’t have to try and make too much small talk. I was fine with just sitting there in silence, but Mike seemed to think that it was necessary to talk about pointless little things like what I had done at school the previous year and when I started to play drums etc. Needless to say that when Mike said “This is it.” I was extremely relieved. I then actually looked at the house and my jaw dropped. It was huge, I hadn’t actually thought about what Mike’s place would be like as I had been more preoccupied with what everyone in his life would think of me.

We pulled into the driveway and I slowly got out of the car. We walked up the path and through the front door where Mike put my bag down in the sort of entrance way.

“I think Estelle is at her friend’s house at the moment.” Mike said “and Sam is at work, I think.” I had almost forgotten about Mike’s wife. He had told me about her even though, being the obsessive Green Day fan that I was, I already knew about her.
“So where can I put my stuff?” I asked gesturing to the things I had brought with me.
“Oh right.” He said, signaling that he had forgotten that I didn’t know my way around his place. “I’ll show you your room.”
We walked up a flight of stairs that was right next to where we were standing and when we got to the landing Mike said. “Your room is just down the hall; Sam has already got the bed ready and everything.” We walked down the hall and Mike pointed things out on the way, like Estelle’s room and the bathroom. “This is your room.” He said opening the door to a room about half way down the hall. “I’ll leave you to get settled in if you want. I’ll be down stairs somewhere.”

I nodded at the idea and he left the room. I closed it behind him. I looked around for the first time, realizing how big it was. There was a large double bed, done up with black sheets and blankets, a large walk in wardrobe, a dressing table with a huge mirror and a few shelves on the plain white walls. The bedside tables, and all of the other furniture in the room, were a very dark wood which matched the linen on the bed. I dumped my duffel on the bed and took out my toiletries bag and put it on the dressing table. I didn’t see the point in unpacking anything as I was only going to be there for 4 days. All I did was take out my phone, wallet, iPod, various chargers, and book and take my sunglasses off of where they were sitting on top of my head and place them on the dressing table next to the toiletries bag. I then pulled my old teddy bear that I had had since I was born, out of my duffel and put it on my new bed. His name was Ron and he was looking extremely old, with his shiny eye that had fallen out a few times and a couple of repaired holes and tears, you could tell that I had had him for 16 years. Lastly, I took my drumsticks out of my bag and put them in the pocket of the baggy black pants I was wearing, I know it sounds stupid but I feel comforted when they are with me.

I looked around the room again and then stood in front of the mirror to look at myself. So this was it, I’m Mike Dirnt’s daughter and I’m here to spend some time with my Dad… I really don’t want to be here right now. I took a deep breath; I can do this. I opened the door and walked out into the hall way. I knew the stairs were to the left but I thought I would just have a quick look at what else was on the second floor. I wandered down the hall, stumbling onto two spare rooms and a linen cupboard. I continued to the last door in the hallway and opened it. I realized straight away that it was Mike and Sam’s bedroom. Holy shit. This was Mike Dirnt’s bedroom. Not wanting to be too nosy I walked back to the other end of the hall and down stairs to the ground floor of the house.

I decided to find Mike to ask him to give me a proper tour around the house and figured that he might be in the kitchen refueling after the drive when it occurred to me that I had no idea where the kitchen was. I looked around, almost hoping or expecting to see a big sign with the words “Kitchen - This Way!” pointing me in the right direction. I poked my head through a doorway to see a lounge room with big couches and a huge T.V. but Mike was no where to be seen so I walked back into the entrance way.

“Mike!” I yelled. I thought that he might be out the back but again, I had no idea how to get there. “Mike!” I called again, only to hear someone yell the same thing from behind me.
I turned around to see Billie Joe standing in the open doorway looking at me strangely.
“Oh my god.” I couldn’t help but mutter.
“Um…hi.” Billie Joe said, still looking at me with a confused face. “Who are you?” he asked me.
“I’m Danielle.” I managed to say. “But everyone calls me Dani.”
“Billie?” a female voice came from the direction of the driveway. “Why are you just standing in the doorway?” I looked past Billie Joe to see a lady with the long dreadlocks walking down the path, followed by two boys, one 16 and the other 13. I knew straight away that it was Adrienne, Joey and Jakob.
“There’s some random girl standing in Mike’s house.” He called back to his wife, still looking at me and still not understanding who I was. “She says her name is Dani or something.”
Adrienne and her two sons reached the doorway and all looked at me.
“She’s not a random, you idiot.” Adrienne said, smacking her husband on the upside of his head. “She’s Mike’s daughter.” Adrienne pushed passed Billie Joe and gave me a hug. “Hi.” She said. “I’m Adrienne.”

A light seemed to switch on inside Billie Joe’s head.
“Oh, Dani!” he said, sticking out his hand to me. “Sorry, hi, I’m Billie.” I shook his hand. “This is Joey and Jakob.” He gestured to his sons who had now stepped into the house.
“Why were you yelling for Mike?” Billie asked.
“Well,” I said. “I was, funnily enough, looking for Mike. He hasn’t completely showed me around yet so it was a little hard to look for him properly.”

Billie nodded and walked down the passageway, leading us all to the kitchen.
“Okay.” He said “he’s not here; he’s probably out the back.” We all followed him again although I was the only one who was properly following him; everyone else knew where they were going. That made me think about how much I had missed out on by him not being there. This was my Dad’s house and someone else’s kids knew their way around better than I did.

We all walked out the back door where I got my first look at the back yard. I was amazed at the size of the swimming pool, but apart from that it just looked like a normal well kept yard, except that it was a whole lot bigger than most.
“Oi Mike!” Billie said, having just spotted Mike standing at the barbeque, he was obviously getting something ready for lunch. “You gotta look after your girl here. She was looking for you, but apparently you haven’t shown her around yet.”
Mike almost blushed. “Oh shit. Sorry Danielle. This is-“ He began to introduce us all.
“We’ve already introduced ourselves. And its Dani, no one calls me Danielle.” I was unable to keep the almost coldness out of my voice as I was reminded, by him calling me Danielle, that he doesn’t know me at all.

The awkward silence that followed was broken by the sounds of people walking through the house.
“Hey everybody, I’m here now, the party may begin.” Came the voice of one of the newcomers. I looked inside the house to see none other than Tre Cool, my idol and in my opinion, the best drummer in the world.
“Hey Tre.” Mike said. The air seemed to become less strained at the arrival of the third member of Green Day. Billie and the rest of his family said hello to Tre and his family and I just stood there waiting to be introduced.

Tre walked completely out of the door.
“You must be Danielle.” He said, extending his hand to me in an over exaggerated gesture of welcome. “I’m Frank Edwin Wright III but you can call me Tre.” He winked at me, which made me smile.
“Hi.” I said. “Call me Dani, no one calls me Danielle.”
“Cool.” He said. “This is my wife Claudia and our son Frankito.” He gestured to his wife, whose hand I shook and to his son, who I smiled at as politely as I could manage whilst still in shock at having a conversation with my drumming idol. I, of course, had already guessed who these people were.

The group of people began to disperse, Billie and Tre started a conversation as did Claudia and Adrienne and Frankito and Jakob.
“Mike?” I said.
“Yeah?”
“Can you show me around now please?”
“Oh yeah,” he said. “Sure.”
“I can show her around if you want.” Joey said, who I had noticed was still standing with us. “So then you can continue with the barbeque and stuff.”
“Sound okay to you Dani?” Mike asked me.
“Yeah okay.” I said. I was unsure of what to think of Joey. He seemed okay, but he had an air about him that suggested he was very popular and he knew it and loved it. Mike smiled at us and walked over to where Tre and Billie were standing by the barbeque.

“Come on.” Joey said, leading me inside the house. We didn’t talk much as he showed me around. He showed me the kitchen, the dining room, lounge room, living area, a room that had a pool table and bar in it, two bathrooms, the laundry, an office and another spare bedroom. The bottom floor was definitely bigger than the up stairs. The last room he showed me was the basement and on the way down the stairs we started to talk about music.
“So what’s you favourite band?” he asked me sounding almost suspicious.
“Well…” I said. What do you say to that when the son of the lead singer of Green Day asks you? “It was Green Day.” I was about to tell him what other bands I liked when he spoke.
“I knew it.” He said.
“I don’t know if I like them anymore though.”
“Why not?”
“Because this whole thing with Mike is…confusing.”
We had reached the bottom of the stairs and I looked around the basement. It was remarkable and kind of reminded me of the basement at home. Mike had obviously set it up like that so he and the guys could jam if they were all at his house and in the mood to play their instruments. There was an electric guitar sitting in one corner, quite a few basses lined up along one wall, a few amps, a large stereo system, a couple of big couches and, what I was most excited about, a really big and expensive drum kit. Joey was standing next to me, watching me take in all the equipment in amazement.

I thought for a few seconds about whether or not I would be allowed to play these drums and decided that I didn’t care if I was allowed or not; Mike was my Dad and these were his drums, he owes me so I’ll play them if I want. I pulled my drum sticks out of my pocket and walked over to the drum kit.
“What are you doing?” Joey asked me.
“What does it look like I’m doing?” I said back, I didn’t want to be rude but I hate it when people ask stupid questions. I paused to think of what to play, not knowing where to start I just played random beats, drumming random parts of different songs and making up new solo patterns. I was the happiest I had been all day.
Joey moved to sit down on one of the couches.
“Are you sure you’re allowed to play those?” he asked.
“I don’t really care if I’m allowed or not, Mike owes me big time.” He sat quietly for a few seconds before speaking again.
“I know what you’re doing here.”
“So do I.” I said. “I’m playing drums. It’s an amazing kit.” I didn’t stop drumming and talked while I played.
“No.” Joey said. “I know what you’re doing here in Oakland.”
“Oh really. And what am I doing here in Oakland?” I tried to keep the bitchiness out of my voice but he was starting to bug me with his stupid questions and arrogant tone.
“You’re just here because Mike is rich and famous.” He said. This caused me to stop drumming.
“Excuse me?” I looked at him with disbelief.
“I saw the way you looked when you were talking to Tre and my Dad. You just wanna spend some time with a rock star and get some money off your Daddy.”

It felt as though some one had slapped me in the face. I stood up and walked around the drum kit so that I was standing in front of Joey who had also stood up.
“How dare you.” I said. “You don’t know a fucking thing about me; you don’t know what I’ve been through. You think I actually want to be here? I would rather be back at home in my scummy little apartment, away from stuck up spoilt brats like you! The only reason I am here is because my Mum thinks it’s a good idea for me to spend some time with my father, who, by the way, you seem to hold in high regard and who hasn’t contacted me in 16 years. So you can take your rich bastard lifestyle, shove it up your ass and go fuck yourself!”
