If you look at the history of the Pop charts in the UK, it really argues the point that it's changed over the years, and now the music is more important than image is. Of course image is going to have an impact, it would be stupid to try and say it makes no difference. But if you look at the mid-nineties in this country, acts like Steps and S Club and all the boybands were frequently topping the charts, and most of them were completely unable to play any instrument, but they got to where they were though clever promotion and, of course, image. Put Lisa Scott-Lee in a dress of somesort and Steps were almost guaranteed a successful single! I'm not going to say there is anything wrong with that, not at all. But I am very much glad it's not the case anymore.
If you look at the natural progression of the Pop charts here, bands who play their own instruments are what's popular now. And it started really with Busted. Of course, there were popular instrument playing bands, but the majority of the chart was made up of soloists and groups. But in came Busted playing their own guitars and whatnot, and they caught fire. Suddenly, looking pretty in a photoshoot didn't cut it anymore, but the popular thing was the playing of instruments. :o And so people like Lisa Scott-Lee failed trying to release new material, the industry has moved on. And now to look at our charts, you'd have a job finding an act in there unable to play their own music on the instruments.
A step in the right direction I think anyway 8)
